Memory

Have you ever thought about how important of a role that your memories plays? You have a short term memory, which is where you will store the information that you only need to know for a short period of time. This would be like the grocery list that you just made in your head real quick before running to the store or  a lot of the information that we pick up from the conversations that we are in. We also have long term memory, which is where you store the information that you need to know for long periods of time. This would be where all of you childhood memories and the routes to places you go to a lot are stored. We use each of these memory types in our every day lives in order to have conversations or to be able to retain new information.

A man named, Clive Wearing, is said to have the worst case of amnesia ever. Amnesia is the inability to remember events for a period of time due that could be due to brain injury or illness. In Wearings case he is only able to remember between 7 to 30 seconds, then he forgets. His short term memory is unable to store the information being given to it. His wife, who is the only person who he physically remembers, says that by the time that he is answering your question and he is replying to it, he has already forgotten what you have asked.
I can relate to the loss of memory because my grandmother passed away from Alzheimer, which is a disease that takes away the memory and the ability to function of the person that has it. She forgot how to do tasks and then forgot people. Alzheimer, along with any other memory hindering diseases, are truly crippling. This should make you appreciate your memory more, I know I appreciate mine.

Building Your Brain Activity

To help me build a brain, I enlisted the help of my four-year-old cousin  Brigg . I chose him to help me out because he truly loves to learn. As a four-year-old he can tell you who our president, vice president, and secretary state are, as well as he has an incredible vocabulary.        Now he was a little camera shy, but when the camera was off we continued our discussion about the brain and he was actually able to retain some of the facts that I told him. But I believe his favorite part of the activity was for sure building the brain with play-doh . I pulled up several pictures of the brain on my computer for us to model our brain off of. I did not ask him to make any of the specific parts of the brain for me, because when I pulled the pictures up he said, "I am only four, I don't know if I can do that.", so we just went with sculpting the four lobes to form our brain.       ...

Sensation and Perception

Our brain has many different tasks, but the one I will be focusing on is the role it plays in our sensation and perception. What are sensation and perception you may ask? Well when your body receives information from your sensory organs, such as your eyes, ears, skin, or nose, it must process it, this is know as sensation. Perception is the psychological aspect of processing that information from the sensory organs and interpreting, as well as using that information.               Now that have a better understanding of sensation and perception, I want to focus on in particular illusions . This can be know as a trick of the mind. However Michael Bach defines them as, "phenomena as highlighting particular good adaptations of our visual system to experience with standard viewing situations. These experiences are based on normal visual experiences, and thus under unusual contexts can lea...

About Me

Hey yall! My name is Jessica Phillips and I am from Dallas, Texas. Well when I leave HSU and go home I go to a little town just south of Dallas called Ovilla. It is a one street light town, that you could drive right through and never even know that you were in it. Now there is one school in Ovilla called Ovilla Christian School and that is where I attended school all 13 years of my education before coming to Hardin-Simmons University. I was always really involved at OCS and to this day I still am. I chose Hardin-Simmons to continue my education because of all of the opportunities it offers, along with the great atmosphere and people here. I also have a twin sister, Kellie, who also decided to continue her education here at HSU too.  My family is all really close to each other. When I am not at college, I live with my dad, mom, twin sister, grandmother, uncle, aunt, and cousin Gabriella. Not to mention our four legged friends, which we have four dogs, Blossom, Molly, Amb...
